초록

The major goal of this paper is to reexamine English compound Stress within the framework of Optimality Theory(Prince & Smolensky 1993; McCarthy & Prince 1993, 1995). We show that compared with previous rule-based analyses of English compound stress, a constraint-based approach can provide a better account of the phenomena. In this paper, proposing Branching Node Prominence constraint and Non-Head Stress constraint, we show that given the constraints, compounds which are composed of more than two words can be accounted for in a satisfactory way regardless of the direction of branching. We also show that compounds with mixed branching structures such as [[labor union][strike force]] can be accounted for straightforwardly by using Rightmost constraint. We finally show that with Copulative Compound Stress constraint and Neoclassical Compound Stress constraint, both Copulative and Neoclassical compounds can be best analyzed under the analysis assumed in this paper.
