초록

풀러신학교의 명예교수인 우드베리(J. Dudley Woodberry)는 3대째 선교사로 하나님으로부터 부름 받았다. 그는 하버드대학교에서 이슬람학으로 박사학위를 취득하고 레바논, 파키스탄, 아프가니스탄, 사우디아라비아에서 13년 동안 선교사역을 감당하였다. 본고는 학문과 현장경험을 이상적으로 갖춘 우드베리의 핵심적인 선교이론을 연구한 것이다. 우드베리는 기독교의 교리를 일방적으로 무슬림에게 전달하기보다는 먼저 무슬림이 가지고 있는 인간관과 기독론의 관점을 연구하였다. 무슬림은 알라가 자신의 뜻에 따라 인간을 창조한 이상, 근본적으로 인간을 선하고 권위 있는 존재로 이해한다. 무슬림이 그리스도교, 유대교, 또는 조로아스터교로 개종하는 것이 죄이다. 무슬림에게 중요한 것은 매일의 삶에서 알라와 꾸란에 복종하는(islam) 것이다. 무슬림에게 예수는 동정녀 마리아의 아들이고 선지자이지만, 결코 성육신하신 하나님은 아니고 십자가에서 죽지도 않으셨다. 그러므로 무슬림은 삼위일체를 철저히 부정한다. 선교현장에서의 경험은 우드베리로 하여금 무슬림에 적합한 상황화(contextualization)를 연구하게 하였다. 그의 상황화는, 기독교와 유대교가 이슬람보다 우선적으로 존재하였고 이슬람은 중동지역에서 이미 수백 년의 역사를 가지고 있었던 두 종교를 받아들이면서 발전했다는 대전제를 가지고 있다. 우드베리는 650명 이상의 무슬림 개종자들을 대상으로 방대한 설문조사를 한 후 내부자 운동에 대해 평가했는데, 그는 여러 단점에도 불구하고 MBB로 인해 더 많은 무슬림들이 복음을 접할 수 있는 기회가 제공되는 것을 중요하게 생각하였다. 일반 무슬림들은 악귀와 같은 어두운 세력으로부터 해방되는 것을 죄로부터 구원받는 것보다 더 우선시하는 경향이 있다. 그래서 우드베리는 민속 이슬람을 위한 능력사역을 필연적으로 받아들였고, 그 구체적인 방안을 예수 그리스도(눅 10장)와 사도 바울(행 15장)의 사역에서 찾았다. 우드베리는 훌륭한 이론가인 동시에 이슬람 현장에서 다양하게 역사하시는 하나님의 선교에 전적으로 열려 있는 선교사이다.

Abstract

J. Dudley Woodberry was born in the line of three generations of missionaries. He had been a missionary for 13 years in Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. He has been teaching at Fuller Theological Seminary since 1985. He is dean emeritus and senior professor of Islamic studies at Fuller’s School of Intercultural Studies and is considered one of the foremost Christian scholars of Islam. In Muslim thought Adam is a prophet, and Muslims have tended to focus on Adam’s forgetfulness(Q 20:115) rather than on his rebellion. The Jesus of the Quran reflects that Isa is a prophet, but not the Son of God. Muslims do not accept concepts such as Trinity, incarnation, and crucifixion. All of the worship forms used and all the religious technical terms in the Quran, except references to Muhammad and Mecca, were used by Jews and/or Christian first. The Quran even includes all of the Ten Commandments. In such a situation, reusing some of Quran and five pillars could be the repossession of what originally belonged to these communities. The earliest Muslim exegete showed no hesitation in recognizing the Jewish and Christian origin of many religious terms in the Quran. An advantage of insider movements(C5) is that they can provide more opportunity and time for ordinary Muslims to hear and see the gospel lived out. Yet, there is an unclear break with non-biblical teachings of Islam and the followers of Isa from Muslim backgrounds are far behind to be a mature christian. The worldview of those with a mixture of formal Islamic and folk beliefs tends to be a power encounter between helpful, harmful, and neutral beings. Christians need to understand what the hand of God is doing today so our hands can cooperated with his. Often he is working in contexts of turmoil.
