Abstract
This aims to probe into Christianity of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, which had been overlooked up to now, although it occupied a considerable position like other Christian areas(OlonSum and Odros) in Inner Mongolia during the Mongol Empire. Especially, this project is primarily carried out on 13th centuries documents including Marco Polo’s The Description of the World, and History of Mar Yahballaha and Rabban Sauma which is a Syriac travelogue. First, It is explored how Christianity, which had begun in Palestine, spread along the Silk Road to Xi’an, China and Inner Mongolia up to 12th century. Then the geographical names and locations of Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, and the legend of Prester John that was said to have existed there during the Mongol Empire are investigated on the basis of the documents mentioned above. Finally, it analyzes and considers the Christian community described in Marco Polo’s The Description of the World, and History of Mar Yahballaha and Rabban Sauma. Through this process, it is suggested that Hohhot, located on the route of the exchange of East-West civilization, was an important Christian city in Inner Mongolia along with Ordos and Olon-Sume during the Mongol Empire. Also, it is shown that although the medieval European and Syrian literature described Hohhot and its Christianity from their different perspectives, they eventually functioned to complement each other and provide a more holistic perspective on Hohhot Christianity.
