초록

On August 14, 2014, the film Hope in Baseco was released in 15 movie theaters nationwide. Hope in Baseco produced by talent donation for the first time in the history of Korean cinema is a documentary dealing with a true story of mission work in the slum area of Baseco in the Philippines and has been produced through the planning of production on August 2011, the first local filming on December 23 through 27, 2011 and the second local filming on August 2013, two years later. The writer visited the Baseco mission field on August 2011, serving as a mobilizer for the production of Hope in Baseco, came up with a cooperative mission plan through media in South Korea after coming back, introduced Baseco to the film director, Kim, Kyeong-sik, working as a professor in the Department of film in Cheongju University and suggested a cooperative mission work through the media. The total audience of Hope in Baseco released on August 14 was 3,138 according to the statistics of the Korean Film Council Cinema Ticket Integrated Computer Network on September 28, 2014. This is much fewer number as compared to that of Don’t Cry for me, Sudan released on September 9, 2010 and that of The Cardinal distributed by Mountain Pictures, the same publisher as that of Hope in Baseco on August 6, 2014, but the various events that took place in the process of film production and the process of publicity are worthy enough for mentioning the importance and value of cooperative mission through media in terms of mission strategies. Moreover, as the statistics show, although the mission strategy through media in Christianity is effective, the reaction of the general Korean Church is compared to that of the Catholic Church. Thus, mentioning the importance of mission strategy using media, the writer looked into the necessity of changing the recognition of Christians through the process of producing the film Hope in Baseco, the process of publicity and the results. The film Hope in Baseco disappointed the producers with a result falling short of the effort of advanced publicity (about 3,000 audiences), which was smaller than expected. The writer emphasized the need of establishing missional ecclesiology by the Church’s lack of interest and ignorance and the absence of universal ecclesiology as the causes for this result. In addition, this study mentioned the necessity of critical contextualization when media were used in terms of mission strategy, and in particular, it discussed the contextualization of the essence of the Gospel while protecting it so that mass media that have been used as the driving force of the diffusion of secularism would not overthrow the Church. As the 2010 Lausanne Cape Town Commitment, which is perceived as a representative mission conference from the evangelical position, emphasized, mission communication strategies using media that can promote the evangelization of the present age should be reconsidered from positive and active positions for the mission mobilization and change of mission consciousness, which is essential for constructing a missional church based on the unity of churches as a universal church.

Abstract

On August 14, 2014, the film Hope in Baseco was released in 15 movie theaters nationwide. Hope in Baseco produced by talent donation for the first time in the history of Korean cinema is a documentary dealing with a true story of mission work in the slum area of Baseco in the Philippines and has been produced through the planning of production on August 2011, the first local filming on December 23 through 27, 2011 and the second local filming on August 2013, two years later.
