Abstract

Korean Church’s mission endeavors are experiencing great difficulties while experiencing the pandemic crisis. Pandemic has always changed history, and this pandemic will also cause major changes in history. The purpose of this paper is to predict the future of missions amid these changes. The major prediction is that the fourth period of Protestant missions will begin with an unintentional pull. Although features of the fourth period of missions cannot be ascertained, it will be a missionary era in the form of transcending geographical distance, cultural barriers, and language and ethnic gaps in missions. Although the existing missionary objects will not disappear, new missionary objects that were not previously noticed will emerge, such as religion versus religion, intergenerational missions, and missions to migrants and refugees. In addition, missions that can be called “total missions” in which are put into all missionary resources to all directions will be achieved. There is a possibility that the distinction between the concept of frontier and backward will disappear. Also, it is predicted that the holism of the missions and gospel will be greatly emphasized within the evangelical camp. Changes in the mission field are creating a new environment. The revival of missions in the second half of the 20th century resulted in the widespread spread of the gospel. In particular, the advancement of Christianity in the Global South is forming a new framework for missions. The spread of nationalism is causing the limits of traditional missions. In particular, the 4th industrial revolution and the pandemic are providing both a crisis and an opportunity for missions. Due to this change, in the near future of missions, the increase in the number of missionaries will be reduced, but it will develop into a type of mission that maximizes the missionary’s effectiveness and changes the role of the missionary. These changes in the times will give new challenges to the evangelical mission theology. The development of a holistic missionary theology or evangelical theology of religions will be greatly requested, and a broad new understanding of the gospel will also be required. Broadening the theological understanding of culture will also be required.
