Abstract

In order to control and manage Christianity in Chosen, Japan promulgated the Missionary Rules in 1915. At this time, each denomination had to prepare matters related to missionary manager, missionary supervisor, and establishment of missionary center and receive approval from the Government-General of Chosen. The ultimate goal of enforcing these Missionary Rules was turn Christianity in Chosen into “Japanese-style Christianity.” To achieve this, Japan employed a three-step strategy. First there was the ‘division strategy.’ This was sub mission from the missionary work, which encouraged conflict and division among believers. Second, it was a ‘persecution strategy.’ Since the emperor of Japan is the state and the supreme god, Japan’s goal was for the state of Chosen to be shaped by the emperor. Believers who resisted this were classified as anti-state figures and were subject to harsh legal punishments, including imprisonment, beatings, and confiscation of property. Thirdly, there was the ‘church closure’ strategy. This was the most powerful weapon used by the Japanese, and it was to apply the utmost pressure, including banning gatherings and closing churches, on church that opposed the national ideology and imperialization policy pursued by the Japanese. The pressure from Japan progressed in the order of ‘strong → weak → strong.’ The period of resistance of Dong-A Chris tian Church from 1915 to 1925 was a period of illegitimate politics and cultural politics. In 1940, when the assimilation politics was in progress, Dong-A Christian Church, which had previously been rejected for submission of a missionary work, reapplied on July 15, and introduced the missionary manager of Dong-A Christian Church, missionary rules, the reason for reapplying for a missionary work, and its history and characteristics. Finally, it was approved by the Governor-General and published in the 「Gazette of the Governor-General of Chosen」 on September 9. Afterwards, the official gazette published the status of submissions to the missionary work of Dong-A Christian Church, selection of missionary managers, and establishment of missionary centers. The reason why Dong-A Christian Church refused to submit the missionary work was because of the principle of separation of state and church, the principle of freedom of religion, and the spirit of protecting freedom of belief. The result was division in the church, a drain of brain, a decline in the church, and even the production of state-aligned believers. This was the trick the Japanese were aiming for. The writer hopes that the lofty faith of Dong-A Christian Church, which opposed ‘Japanese-style Christianity’ and tried to protect the essence of the church and biblical ec clesiology, will be inherited and developed.
