Abstract

This paper aims to classify representations of food and eating practices in Choi Seung-ja’s poetry of the 1980s and to examine their poetic functions and meanings. In her poems, “bob”(rice or meal), which appears frequently, functions as a symbol of repetitive daily routines and the meaninglessness of survival. The poetic imagination of consuming contaminated substances materializes the reality of capitalism and exposes its vulgarity. In this context, the act of eating in Choi Seung-ja’s poetry signifies a poetic mode of perceiving and engaging with the external world that exceeds mere physical intake. Choi’s poetry employs eating, spitting out food, and the exposure of excess as strategies to reveal the essence of capitalist everyday life and its system of exchange. Furthermore, hunger in her poems corporealizes an underlying sense of lack while simultaneously articulating a longing for a pure form of life, symbolized by “clean bob(rice).”
