Abstract
This study focused on the emergence of a non-human agent called ‘AI algorithm’ as a new communication subject, and explored critical literacy as a mechanism to identify the communication characteristics in the AI algorithm-based text environment and to take an subjective practices. For the development of discussion, ‘AI algorithm-based text environment’ is defined as “an environment where AI algorithms directly or indirectly affect overall text-mediated activities such as text production, response and distribution through intelligent roles such as reasoning and judgment”. In addition, the characteristics of text-mediated communication in this new environment were examined focusing on participants, texts, and interaction patterns. Based on this, the violation of Grice(1975)'s maxim in the AI algorithm text environment was reviewed. After that, the practices of critical literacy in the AI algorithm-based text environment were explored, focusing on how to respond to violations of the maxim. Specifically, the critical practice in response to the violation of the maxim of quantity, quality, relation, and manner is “the pursuit of differences to approach the comprehensive truth, qualitative verification and reconstruction based on ‘algorithmic imaginary’, discovery of invisible relevance and the realization of ‘accountability’, and recovery of agency through raising the issue of clarity”. The above discussion is meaningful in that it suggests the role of human agents and the direction of literacy practice in a new text environment realized by the advent of AI algorithms, which are non-human agents.
