Abstract

This article examines the specific activities of the seven loyal governors of Seokjugwan, the chief of the Righteous Army (RA) in Gurye, Jeollanam-do during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597. I analyzed the content and meaning of the gentry of Gurye admiring them. When the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1597) broke out, Gurye was the first Japanese invasion in Jeolla-do. Japanese troops stationed in Gurye searched and brutally killed Koreans who fled into the mountains. The RA rose against the Japanese army’s violence. The activities of the seven loyal governors of Seokjugwan were divided into the 1st Righteous Army of Wang Deuk-in and the 2nd Righteous Army of the six loyal governors. The first Righteous Army activity was an activity to protect one’s county against indiscriminate looting and violence by the Japanese army in a situation where the help of the government army or the Ming army could not be expected. The second Righteous Army was an effort to protect the county from the tyranny of the remaining Japanese troops as the Japanese withdrew and further to bring back the residents who were captured by the Japanese army. However, since the end of the war, the Joseon government has paid no attention to the seven loyal governors of Seokjugwan. All of them died in battle or lived in seclusion, so they could not leave their traces during the Jeongyujaeran(丁酉再亂) period. They were not listed as a contributor to Wonjong and were excluded from private history. Regardless of the state’s approval, the local people did not forget them. Local elders regretted that the government did not reward them while talking about the old days of the seven loyal governors of Seokjugwan. In 1798, a reversal took place. In the process of reconstructing the Daeungjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple, a written statement asking the Hwaeomsa Temple to provide military and military support was found in the name of six loyal governors, including WangUiseong. A diary was also found during further investigation. Through several statements, letters of mourning, and the passage of Confucian scholars in the province, the seven loyal governors of Seokjugwan eventually received the grace of the post in 1804. Then, by establishing the logic of loyalty and filial piety, the benefits of Jeongryeo were added to the Wang’s father and son. Since then, they have been enshrined in the Chunghyosa Temple side by side, and a practical book on their activities has been published. Although there are differences in order in Gurye, the order of Seokjugwan Chilui was recognized and confirmed as a historical reality by sequentially conducting the memorial service, memorial service, Confucian academy orientation, and compilation of records. It was the pride of the county that produced a number of loyal governors in small counties such as Gurye. For this reason, the people of Gurye did not give in to numerous failures and frustrations and started to worship the seven loyal governors. Through this, the ethics practiced by the seven loyal governors and their actions tried to create a place where Gurye-hyeon practiced all the people.
