Abstract
Forest resources are recognized as vital for biodiversity conservation, tourism, recreation, and forest education. Many people, especially in cities, often express that it is difficult to find forests and gardens. However, beautiful gardens, forests, and temple groves are easily accessible and provide opportunities to experience nature. Temple forests account for 1.3% of Korea’s total forest area and possess rich ecosystems and biodiversity, but their management systems remain weak. Recently, both within and outside the Buddhist community, there has been growing recognition of the need for temple forest surveys, healing or meditation forests, and arboretums, in order to respond to social needs while contributing to the sustainable management of temple forests. This study aims to propose measures for establishing a Buddhist temple arboretum. A survey was conducted with 72 Buddhist monks and temple officials, along with 189 visitors. The results revealed clear differences in perspective between the two groups. Monks and officials expressed greater interest in transmitting Buddhist culture and enhancing the image of temples through a meditation-oriented arboretum, whereas the general public had higherexpectations for forest recreation and education. However, both groups emphasized the importance of preserving the heritage value of traditional temples and the sustainable management of temple forests. Notably, both strongly supported the need for a meditation arboretum in line with contemporary trends, while also recognizing temple forest management as the most important function in relation to local communities. Based on these findings, several suggestions for establishing a Buddhist temple arboretum are proposed. First, arboretum planning should adopt a long-term perspective, fostering shared values among Buddhist communities while providing education for visitors and local residents. Second, the primary function of a Buddhist temple arboretum should be the preservation of temple forests, with complementary roles in relaxation, education, and the conservation of traditional temple landscapes. Accordingly, the functions of temple arboretums can be categorized into several types: preservation of temple forests, harmony between temples and their natural surroundings, forest interpretation, forest therapy, forest kindergartens, as well as forest tourism and recreation.
