Abstract

This paper is a study of 'the poetry of grass' centering on the interpretation of Kim Su-young's last work, the "Grass". It has been regarded as a work with the simplicity that was not like Kim Su-young's, and at the same time as a model of a poem of 'no meaning'. This interpretation proves that the 「grass」 includes the void aspect of the interpretation, even though it has been an important authority in establishing Kim Su-young's myth. The interpretation of the "Grass" should go on to explain the tension of experience and thought through the inquiry of the paradoxical movement of grass. According to the analysis of this paper, the "Grass" has a dual structure. One is the 'grass' movement(lying down/standing up) and the other is the movement of the poetic subject(crying/laughing). Both begin at the gap between the first and third rows and the fourth and sixth rows at first stanza, and are strengthened at the second and third stanza. Nevertheless, we fail to perceive this correctly because both are being juxtaposed without the use of punctuation marks. Given these structural characteristics, the "Grass" can be reinterpreted at several points: First, the relationship between 'grass' and 'wind' can be interpreted as objective fact sufficiently considering the interaction of the two. Second, the subjects of 'cry' and 'laugh' are not 'grass' but 'poetic subject'. Third, from the 'grass' movement the transition from 'cry' to the 'laugh' of the poetic subject begins. Fourth, 'grassroots lie down' means the utterance of a poetry as a new beginning. This conclusion shows that the "Grass" is not only 'a poetry of grass' but also 'a poetry of wind and rain' and 'a poetry of freedom and sorrow'.
