초록

Flavobacterium species are a widespread group of bacteria commonly isolated from various aquatic environments. Among these, several species have been identified as significant pathogens in aqua- culture, causing substantial economic losses. Flavobacterium plurextorum is one such pathogen, pre- viously reported to infect rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) eggs. To date, no reports exist of F. plurextorum infection in salmonids within Korea. In January 2024, an outbreak of acute mortality (50–60% within seven days) was observed among acclimated rainbow trout obtained from a local farm in Korea. Affected fish exhibited prominent external lesions, including ulceration and hemorrhaging around the caudal peduncle and fin, with severe cases leading to vertebral column exposure and tail detachment. Yellow-pigmented, smooth colonies were isolated from external lesions, internal organs, and ascites. The isolate was identified as F. plurextorum via 16S rRNA gene sequencing with 100% identity to known strains. This study provides the first evidence of F. plurextorum causing severe muscular damage and high mortality in rainbow trout in Korea.
