Abstract
This paper seeks to answer the question of Jeong Ji-yong's poem Homesickness “Like night waves dancing on the legendary sea/ With a young sister with black hair flying below her ears”, why the poetic word ‘legendary’ appears. Jeong Ji-yong's representative work, Homesickness, was controversial as an imitation, and the ‘difference’ felt in this poem is due to the problem of ‘description/metaphorical image’ rather than the ‘foreign/local’ problem. This is because, as much as it describes the scenery of his hometown, this poem is a metaphor for the oral tradition of 'sitting around all night' and “telling old stories” of his hometown so as 'not to forget it in his dreams'. The basis for this is the intertext of 'image overlap', Old Story Verses, "Like sad water in a big pot/ This whispering country night/ Turns around and listens like the locals who came to visit." There is the similarity image of 'sadness' in between ‘water(sea)’ and ‘story (legend)’. And this poem personifies ‘story’ and deals with the communal universality of stories passed down orally as ‘songs.’ In the end, when looking at the two poems together, the sister's 'hair below her ears' as she listens intently to the story being 'told' by her brother, a storyteller who is a 'living legend' in her hometown, is as if the 'words' are flowing into her 'ears'. It is an imagination of an image “Legendary Sea" that looks like a ‘waves’ of the sea ‘dance’ like hair.
