초록

Rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) causes 100% mortality in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) at their optimum water temperature (23-27°C). This study investigates the interplay between RBIV in- fection, and the transcriptional responses of key metabolic and antioxidant genes in rock bream, focus- ing on energy metabolism and oxidative stress. Notably, elevated pyruvate kinase (PK) expression in the early stages of infection (high mortality group, experiment I) indicated active glucose utilization, while a decline in PK levels later (high mortality group, experiment II) suggested insufficient energy production as viral proliferation increased. Despite this decline, high glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) expression persisted until 8 days post-infection, indicating that gluconeogenesis regulation remained intact. Furthermore, increased expression of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in the low mortality group at 2 days post-infection highlighted its role in supporting lipid synthesis and effective immune responses. In contrast, significant downregulation of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and gluta- thione-S-transferase (GST) in the high mortality group at 10 dpi signified oxidative stress, correlating with increased mortality. Our findings reveal how metabolic gene expression varies across tissues, emphasizing the need for further research into amino acid and fatty acid metabolism to elucidate the mechanisms underlying survival differences under varying infection conditions.

Abstract

Rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) causes 100% mortality in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) at their optimum water temperature (23-27°C). Our findings reveal how metabolic gene expression varies across tissues, emphasizing the need for further research into amino acid and fatty acid metabolism to elucidate the mechanisms underlying survival differences under varying infection conditions.
