Abstract

This study examines how the “world of my heart” in Kim Yeong-rang’s poetry is shaped by a reason-driven desire. Specifically, it analyzes how the desire and limitations of reason are projected through the image of “spring.” The poetic subject in Kim Yeong-rang’s works believes in the possibility of perceiving objects transparently and desires to align the totality of all existence with the inner landscape of the “heart.” However, the subject, who once dreamed of complete unity with the world through the logic of identification, gradually realizes that this desire is ultimately an unattainable ideal. Although the subject’s consciousness aspires to a world where all beings are harmoniously unified, like “spring,” this vision is soon frustrated by the intrusion of fundamental ambiguity and contingency-namely, the opacity of existence. In the later poems, the meaning of the “spring” image no longer represents a world of pure identity that can be clearly grasped by reason; instead, it begins to symbolize the intrusion of existential opacity. This phenomenon of opacity breaking into the poetic world of Kim Yeong-rang implicitly critiques and signals the limitations and collapse of modern subjectivity. Ultimately, this study aims to reveal that Kim Yeong-rang’s poetry presents a tension between the transparency pursued by reason and the opacity of existence. Furthermore, it demonstrates that, due to the desires and inherent limitations of reason, Kim Yeong-rang’s poetic subject remains confined to an idealistic and isolated self. By analyzing the reason-driven desire that continuously propels the “world of my heart” and its limitations ― an aspect of Kim Yeong-rang’s poetry that has not been thoroughly examined ― this study provides an in-depth elucidation of the core characteristics of his poetic world.
