Abstract

The text highlights the similarities and differences in KAPF’s works, focusing on ‘city’ and ‘street’. Until now, research on KAPF has primarily focused on the works of a few poets. This text deviates from the conventional approach and brings out the characteristic aspects of ‘city’ and ‘street’ as depicted in the poems of KAPF poets. The period from 1925 to 1935, when KAPF was active, was marked by rapid urbanization and industrialization, signifying the establishment of colonial capitalism. Despite the fact that there were far more farmers than workers in Korea at the time, KAPF focused more on the city(workers) than the countryside(farmers) because their literature was a form of resistance against colonial capitalism, particularly influenced by socialism. In KAPF’s poetry, the ‘city’ was generally perceived as a negative space dominated by poverty, corruption, and exploitation. Particularly, when the city was portrayed as a space of exploitation, it was connected to the harsh working conditions symbolized by ‘factories’. Meanwhile, in KAPF’s works, the ‘street’ was recognized in a dual manner: as an enlightening symbol of a new world breaking away from feudal order, and as a space of revolution and liberation aimed at transforming the oppressive reality represented by labor exploitation and the wealth gap. Notably, as the class-oriented nature of KAPF became more pronounced, the ‘street’ tended to be equated more with the latter meaning rather than the former.
