Abstract
This paper focuses on the ‘ordinary usage’, which is a unique expression in the so-series of demonstratives, and conducts a quantitative analysis of sokora-no NP, sonohen-no NP and sokorahen-no NP. Examples were collected and analyzed from the BCCWJ corpus. The findings show that the typical form of the ‘ordinary usage’ of so-demonstratives is ‘sokora-no + noun phrases related to people’. While previous studies only introduced examples followed by nouns related to people, the analysis in this paper reveals that it is not rare for the ‘ordinary usage’ of so-demonstratives to be followed by nouns that represent things or places other than people. In addition, by comparing these results with the classification of nouns following heibon-na and arifure-ta, it was found that one of the characteristics of the ‘ordinary usage’ and the ambiguous usage is the very small number of examples in the ‘other’ category, which does not apply to people, animals, plants, things, or places. Regarding the syntactic features of the ‘ordinary usage’ of so-demonstratives, the following characteristics were observed: (ⅰ) frequent co-occurrence with the negative form of a verb or with nai; (ⅱ) not infrequent co-occurrence with expressions such as chigau (different) or onaji (same); (ⅲ) many cases with yori or no-hou. Altogether, over 70% of the examples exhibited these characteristics.. Through the quantitative analysis, one aspect of the ‘ordinary usage’ of so-demonstratives, which had received little attention in previous research, was clarified. The analysis also clarified the similarities and differences with the ambiguous usage of so-demonstratives, which are often mistakenly regarded as the same expression.
