본 연구에서는 우리나라의 속담 중에서 시각장애와 관련된 것들을 선별하고, 그 내용과 함의를 분석함으로써 그 속에 내재되어 있는 시각장애인에 대한 태도를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 우리나라의 속담을 통해 본 시각장애인에 대한 태도는 크게 부정적인 태도와 긍정적인 태도로 분류할 수 있는데, 부정적인 태도의 유형은 다음과 같이 9가지로 정리될 수 있다. ① 무능력한 사람, ② 무지한 사람, ③ 편협한 사람, ④ 책임을 타인에게 전가하는 사람, ⑤ 무가치한 사람, ⑥ 사회성이 부족한 사람, ⑦ 무모한 사람, ⑧ 열등감을 지닌 사람, ⑨ 분수를 모르는 사람. 한편 시각장애인에 대한 긍정적인 태도는 다음의 3가지로 정리된다. ① 반성하는 사람, ② 유능한 사람, ③ 효도하는 사람. 결론적으로, 속담을 통해서 분석한 시각장애인에 대한 태도 중에서 긍정적인 태도보다 부정적인 태도가 더 많은 비율을 차지하고 있으며, 이 부정적인 태도는 오랜 세월이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 여전히 한국인의 의식 속에 깊이 자리잡고 있음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes towards people with visual impairments reflected in Korean proverbs.To accomplish this purpose, six dictionaries containing Korean proverbs were examined and then 338 proverbs dealing with either visual impairment or blindness were found. However, since some of these proverbs are overlapping one another, they were categorized according to their meanings. From each category, 92 proverbs were selected for subjects of this study. Findings of this study indicated that attitudes towards people with visual impairments reflected in Korean proverbs were both negative and positive. Negative attitudes towards people with visual impairments in the Korean proverbs included: incompetence; ignorance; narrow-mindedness; blaming on others; uselessness; lack of sociability; recklessness; sense of inferiority; and going beyond one's own place. Positive attitudes included: being reflective; being competent; and being filial to parents. Results of this study suggested that negative attitudes towards people with visual impairments were more prevalent as compared to positive ones in Korean proverbs. Further, negative attitudes commonly held by Korean people towards those with visual impairments were not found to be changed as much as one would have anticipated.
