Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how media articles, one of the areas of public language, use proverbs that discriminate against the disabled from a critical point of view. First, we examine the use and distribution of discriminatory proverbs for the disabled with statistical analysis of recent article data and point out the motives and problems of the use of them. In addition, we briefly present measures to prevent the use of discriminatory expressions in media articles, including discriminatory proverbs for the disabled. Through this process, it has been confirmed that discriminatory proverbs for the disabled are used a lot in media articles, among which three proverbs are used very actively: "touching the elephant by the blind," "the mute eaten honey," and "the mute suffer in silence." More than three times the discriminatory proverbs against the disabled were used by reporters and contributors themselves than by third parties. More local daily newspapers use discriminatory proverbs than central daily newspapers. It was interpreted that local daily newspapers did not properly respond to the use of discriminatory expressions. Discriminatory proverbs for the disabled are used effectively in the motivation of “enhancing the power of expression,” “criticizing,” and “sympathizing.” It is considered unjustified in that it hurts the disabled and selfishly uses the difficult situation of the disabled. The use of discriminatory expressions by the media, which is social instrument, is seriously problematic in terms of negative effects and responsibility. We point out that in order to solve this problem, media workers need to raise awareness of discrimination and make clear and practical efforts at the individual media or overall press.
