Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to examine the pathways between perceived vision loss and the level of daily happiness mediated by general self-efficacy among people with visual impairments. Specifically, this study is interested in the different role of self-efficacy depending on the degree of vision loss in the relationship between the perception of progressive vision loss and happiness. Methods: We used a sample of 495 individuals with visual impairments in the 2nd wave of the PSED(Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled) collected in 2020. For the statistical analysis, a multi-group path-analysis using structural equation modeling was conducted. Results: The path between perceived vision loss and the level of daily happiness fully mediated by general self-efficacy was significant only among the individuals with mild vision loss. For the individuals with severe vision loss, the correlation between self-efficacy and the level of daily happiness was significant while the perceived vision loss did not affect the level of self-efficacy. Conclusions: These findings suggest the general self-efficacy can have different intrinsic meanings in terms of source of capability among the individuals with vision impairments depending on the degree of vision loss since they appear to utilize their available sense in dealing with daily tasks.
