Abstract

This study explores the interplay between mothering and language learning experiences of married immigrant women with children in Korean society through a narrative analysis. Using multimodal data including Language Portraits and in-depth interviews, the language learning experiences and identity construction of 5 participants were analyzed at story-Story-STORY levels. The findings reveal that the participants' Korean language learning is inseparably connected to their mothering context, and their identity formation is a complex and cyclical process occurring in multiple contexts including family, educational institutions, and local communities. In particular, the varying linguistic demands according to children's developmental stages significantly influenced the participants' language learning motivation and directionality. Over time, their identities evolved beyond the stage of mere `adaptation' and developed more proactively and expansively. These results suggest that language education for married immigrant women requires an integrated approach that considers their multilayered identities and life contexts, beyond the narrow focus on mere communication skills improvement.
