Abstract

This study examines how the social roles of female marriage immigrants have been represented in Korean language education research and explores its implications to enhance representation and educational quality in the field of Korean language education. To achieve this goal, a total of 163 academic journal articles published between 2006 and 2024 were collected and analyzed. The social roles of female marriage immigrants were categorized into “adult learners,” “family members,” and “community members,” and trends over time were reviewed. The analysis revealed that research has mainly focused on “adult learners,” with an emphasis on language learning and educational practices, while studies on cultural adaptation and psychological well-being have been limited. As “family members,” roles such as “mother” and “parent” were actively discussed, whereas “wife” received less attention. Interest in the “resident” role as a community member has grown, while attention to the “worker” role emerged only after 2018. These trends reflect the influence of government policies linking social adaptation to language and cultural education, as well as the traditional gender-based division of labor. This study suggests that Korean language education should broaden its scope to support female marriage immigrants' psychological stability, personal growth, intercultural communication in marriage, and economic participation, enabling them to fulfill diverse social roles more effectively.
