Abstract

This qualitative study examines the phenomenon of self-empathy in music and imagery (MI), one of the psychological therapy techniques. The participants of this study were a total of 12 experts with experience in MI training. Qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews and individual session transcripts. A grounded theory model of the self-empathetic phenomenon was derived through open coding, axing coding, and selective coding. A total of 147 concepts derived from open coding were categorized into 15 self-empathetic phenomena, and the central phenomenon of “music attunement explained the theoretical context. The cause and effect condition of self-empathy phenomenon appeared to be ‘contact of self-desire,’ and the contacted inner self-desire leads to the experience of ‘music attunement,’ which is the central phenomenon according to the contextual condition of ‘emotion and body-sensory awareness.’ In the process of empathizing with music, participants interact with music by reflecting or expressing their internal object into music, or transferring, projecting, and resonating their emotions into music. The core phenomenon was music attunement, and participants intervene to ‘maintain high receptivity’ to protect the core phenomenon from any hindrance. Staying at a particular image or listening to music maintains ‘self-acceptance.’ It also utilizes an interaction strategy to further stimulate music attunement, the core phenomenon, through a way that proactively allows one‘s inner work. As a result of music attunement, participants empathically embrace the new part of themselves. Self-empathy is about acquiring a new perspective on oneself, acquiring new emotions, and acquiring new body sensations.
