Abstract

This research aims to examine the adaptability of workplace counselors to non-face-to-face art therapy sessions and their dynamic interactivity under the Covid-19 pandemic by scrutinizing the real-life experiences of the counselors in the new setups. The purpose of this study is to focus on the situational chain structures corresponding to the counselors’ experiences of non-face-to-face art therapies and their procedural changes. For the data collection, both focus group interviews and individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 workplace counselors with experiences of non-face-to-face sessions, and a total of 227 concepts, 41 sub-categories, and 14 categories were extracted from the data. Data analyzed through grounded theory derived four stages: ‘departure in uncertainty,’ ‘exploring an unfamiliar terrain with a beginner‘s mind,‘ ’rediscovery of the value of contact-free art therapy,‘ and ’taking a new step.‘ This research discovered that participants used the opportunity of the new non-face-to-face setups to re-establish their identities as art therapists and to expand their competencies. The research provides both the limitations and possibilities as rudimentary data for non-face-to-face art therapy and suggests directions that future research should take to address possible problems concerning non-face-to-face art therapy.
