Abstract
On August, 1923, Kanto earthquake of magnitude 7.9-8.3 occurred, the mortality and the missing reached 15,385. In this situation, the Japanese Police attempted to turn people’s attention the other way by spreading a rumor that Koreans murdered and set fire during the period, which resulted in the sacrifice of 6,661 Koreans. This paper aims to examine how Akutagawa Ryunoske’s literature changed with the disaster. After the Earthquake, most of Akutagawa’s novels handled his surroundings and the mental disorder of his mothter. He also wrote about the miserable situation in which people should feel pity for each other during the catastrophe but enjoyed the slaughter instead. His historical awareness deepened after his travel in China for four months from March to July in 1921, he criticized the colonial policy of Japanese imperialism through “Genaral Kim” and “Momotaro.”
