초록

Jangseung is a type of totem pole, a guardian protecting villages and temples against evil spirits and other calamities. This study investigates the parent rocks and morphology of stone Jangseung in Shinangun, Jeollanamdo Province. Six stone Jangseungs are present in the three islands of Shinangun. Two of them are located in Saogdo island of Jidoeup and are called as Dangchonri stone Jangseung. Another one is located in Naeweolri, Bigeummyeon, while the other three are each located in Goranri, Woisang village of Woinamiri and Gunghang village of Soohangri in Dochomyeon. In the literatures of cultural heritages, the parent rocks of the Shinan-gun Jangseung are usually described as granite. The parent rock, however, is actually Cretaceous lapilli tuffs, which include rock fragments of various sizes up to 10cm. Most of the rock fragments are green- to brown-colored tuffs and rhyolite. In conclusion, the parent rocks of Jangseung in our study area are lapilli tuffs, which derived from the island where the Jangseung is located. The relics are mostly preserved under good condition, but some of them were damaged by improper maintenance and moss encrusted on the rock. The head of the Naeweolri Jangseung represents a ganju-shape helmet of the general during Chosun dynasty. The Goran-ri Jangseung is shaped as an officer of the Chosun dynasty. Also, judging from the bold chest adornment and coat neckband shaped like a weapon, the Oynamiri Jangseung and Soohangri Jangseung resembles the Red Coat of England army in 17th century.
