Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the species composition and distribution characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrates in the major aquatic ecosystems of Sorokdo Island, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, and to provide fundamental ecological data necessary for ecosystem conservation and management. A total of 61 species belonging to 4 phyla, 6 classes, 16 orders, and 39 families were identified, with insects (Insecta) comprising approximately 72% of the total species, making them the most dominant group. Among major taxa, Odonata showed the highest number of species, reflecting the fact that Sorokdo's aquatic systems are largely composed of lentic environments. Species richness was higher in wetland and reservoir-adjacent areas, while brackish zones exhibited relatively low species diversity. However, the presence of key species such as the legally protected brackish snail Clithon retropictum and the Korean endemic clam Pisidium coreanum highlights the high conservation value of these mixed aquatic environments. Notably, 57.4% of the identified species belonged to the Odonata–Hemiptera–Coleoptera (OHC) group, indicating the stability and quality of the lentic ecosystems in Sorokdo. Additionally, 33 species subject to international export approval were recorded, underscoring the island’s significance in the context of global biological resource management. This study emphasizes that biodiversity surveys in island aquatic ecosystems should not be limited to lotic systems, but must include lentic environments, with an OHC-group-based monitoring framework. The findings are expected to serve as valuable baseline data for long-term ecological monitoring, eco-tourism development, and environmental education planning.
