BACKGROUND: Ecological functions of irrigation pondswere well known fact that important for biodiversityconservation in agricultural ecosystems. However, manyirrigation ponds were destructed with changes ofagricultural environment. The objective of this study is toappreciate the importance of ecological functions ofirrigation pond. Furthermore, it presented to usefulinformation for restorations of irrigation pond fromanalyses of correlations between benthic macroinvertebratecommunities and locational factors of irrigation ponds. METHODS AND RESULTS: Benthic macroinvertebratesampling was conducted from 2010 to 2012 at 15 studyponds. Comparisons of benthic macroinvertebratesdiversity approached species richness and density, andstatistical analyses were performed using independentt-test. A total of 131 species / 137,118 individuals of benthicmacroinvertebrates were recorded during study period. Dominant taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates includedColeoptera, Hemiptera, and Odonata. Generally, benthicmacroinvertebrate diversity in mountain region andexisting ponds were showed higher than open field andcreated ponds, respectively. DCA ordination showed thatbenthic macroinvertebrate community was most correlatedwith locational characteristics of irrigation pond, and itcorrelated with bank type and age of pond. CONCLUSION(S): In conclusions, in order to restoreecological irrigation pond, it is necessary to considerenvironmental factors such as locational characteristics andbank types.
