Abstract

This study was conducted to motivate university students living in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, some rural areas, to improve their oral health through surveys on the perception and use of oral hygiene products, and to provide basic data to implement systematic national oral health project policies by suggesting the necessity of oral health education. During the study period, a self-institutional survey was conducted from March to June 2025, and the survey method was distributed and collected using collective surveys, distribution surveys, and mail-in, and 387 copies were finally analyzed. For data analysis, SPSS/Win 25.0 was used to conduct a penumbral analysis on general characteristics, the actual use of oral hygiene products, and the reasons for using oral hygiene products according to general characteristics, and x2-test was conducted on whether oral hygiene products were recognized, the use of oral hygiene products, the reason for using oral hygiene products, and the need for oral hygiene products. In terms of gender, women were more common, the three-year school system was more common, and the first grade accounted for a high proportion of the distribution by grade. In terms of recognition of oral hygiene products, recognition was high with 207 dental floss(53.5%) and 238 interdental toothbrushes(61.4%), while non-recognition was high with 251 dental flossers(64.9%), 246 toothpicks(63.6%), 265 oral toothbrushes(68.5%), 240 electric toothbrushes(62.1%), and 345 others(89.2%). The reason for using oral hygiene products was high with 171 people(44.2%), followed by 87 people(22.5%) recommended by dentists, 70 others(18.1%), 27 people(6.9%) recommended by dental hygienists, 17 people(4.4%) recommended by people around them, and 15 people(3.9%) recommended advertisements. In terms of recognition of oral hygiene products, men had interdental toothbrushes as high as 48 people(33.2%), women had dental floss as 72 people(29.3%), women had interdental toothbrushes as high as 69 people(31.8%), and four-year dental floss as 57 people(33.1%). In the use of oral hygiene products, interdental toothbrushes were high with 76 people (35.2%), 39 people(22.8%), and first, second, and fourth graders had high dental floss as 34 people(26.5%), 34 people(39.5%), and 32 people(32.9%), and third graders had high dental floss as 24 people(31.6%). The reason for the use of oral hygiene products was that the need for oral hygiene products was the highest in both school and grade, and the need for oral hygiene products was high in men with 95(67.0%), and women with 214(87.3%). As a result of the above, in order to prevent oral diseases of college students, it is necessary to expand opportunities for education on the correct knowledge and use of oral hygiene products suitable for oral conditions, and contribute to the improvement of oral health through the development, implementation, and promotion of systematic and popular oral health education programs along with active education. In addition, it is considered necessary to promote practical oral health activities such as recommending the carrying of oral care products to promote the oral health of college students.
