Abstract

This study aims to examine the current management status of Ulleungdo's uninhabited islands and Dokdo's adjacent islands and to propose future tasks. Uninhabited islands serve as ecological treasures, functioning as habitats and spawning grounds for diverse marine life. Particularly, uninhabited islands located at the nation's outermost periphery, such as Ulleungdo and Dokdo, play a crucial role in expanding maritime territory. Although 12 uninhabited islands around Ulleungdo are managed under the <Act on the Conservation and Management of Uninhabited Islands>, six of these are not registered in the cadastral records. Furthermore, at least six uninhabited islands require a review of their names. Furthermore, only three of the nine uninhabited islands considered as criteria for demarcating the territorial sea around Ulleungdo are currently managed. Regarding Dokdo, while 89 adjacent islets with an area of 4m2 or larger are registered in the cadastral records, 76 rocks lack official names. A re-survey of the uninhabited islands around Ulleungdo is required to register the islands considered as criteria for territorial sea demarcation. For Dokdo, the registration of names for its adjacent islands is required. This study is considered to contribute to the systematic management of Ulleungdo's uninhabited islands and Dokdo's adjacent islands.
