Abstract
During the Pacific War, the Japanese Empire, finding itself on the defensive, began preparations in February 1945 to protect the so-called 'homeland.' This included the execution of the 'Ketsu No. 7 Operation (決7號作戰)' across seven regions, six within Japan and one outside (specifically Jeju Island). As part of this operation, numerous caves, gun emplacements, and structures were built for defensive purposes on key islands and coastal areas of the southwestern coast of Korea, including Jeju Island. Over the past decade, the Cultural Heritage Administration has carried out research and investigations, particularly focusing on Jeju Island, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do. However, the relics of the Pacific War have been neglected, and their traces are fading, even in the memories of local residents. In May 2022, a series of caves were found on the campus of Kunsan National University in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, drawing public attention. Subsequent investigations and research were conducted, and related findings were published. However, the detailed connections between these caves and military facilities, such as the Gunsan Airfield and the 160th Division in Iri (now Iksan) and Gunsan, remain subjects for further study. Therefore, this paper seeks to fundamentally reassess the strategic importance of Gunsan during the Japanese occupation, with a particular focus on the formation of the Gunsan Airfield and the interviews with laborers mobilized during its construction. Through this, it is hoped that research on the war relics in the Gunsan area, including the Gunsan Airfield, will advance. This study aims to stimulate ongoing discussions on the in-depth investigation and utilization of Asia-Pacific War relics, particularly in the southwestern coastal island regions of Korea.
