김현승은 『견고한 고독』이나 『절대고독』이라는 시집의 제목이 말해주듯이 ‘고독’을 필생의 화두로 삼아 시를 쓴 독특한 시인이다. 이 논문에서는 김현승이 추구한 ‘고독’의 의미, 그리고 신앙과의 관계를 살피는 데에 주안점을 두고자 한다. 김현승의 고독은 자유의지와 교만으로 인하여 타락한 천사인 루시퍼의 형벌과 관련된 ‘루시퍼 콤플렉스’를 바탕으로 전개된다. 김현승의 고독에는 「자화상」, 「인간은 고독하다」의 ‘회의에 기울기 좋고’나 ‘연옥’, ‘사탄의 저항’ 등에 드러나는 죄의식이 내재되어 있다. 김윤식을 비롯한 많은 논자들은 김현승이 고독을 절대시하면서 ‘신앙을 떠난 고독’에 머무르게 됨으로써 기독교적 전통 속에서 양육된 그가 비기독교적 세계에 빠진 것으로 파악한다. 그러나 이런 판단은 김현승의 일면만을 강조한 것이거나, 제임스 파울러의 신앙발달단계를 무시한 것으로 보인다. 파울러는 신앙발달의 단계를 일곱 단계로 나누는 바, 김현승이 ‘신으로부터 인간으로’, ‘신앙으로부터 고독으로’ 향하는 시기는 다섯 번째 단계인 ‘개별적 성찰적 신앙Individual-Reflective Faith’으로서, 이 시기에는 비신화화를 특질로 하여 ‘더 이상 다른 사람들에 대한 자신의 역할이나 의미의 구성에 의하여 정의되지 않고, 오히려 새로운 자신의 정체성과 세계관을 가지고 자신의 의미의 틀을 구성’하게 된다. 김현승이 구성한 의미의 틀이 곧 ‘절대고독’ 혹은 ‘견고한 고독’으로 나타난 것이다. 김현승은 이성의 신뢰를 의미하는 프로메테우스 콤플렉스를 드러내는 화자를 통하여 ‘절대고독’, 혹은 ‘견고한 고독’의 의미를 천착하게 된다. 인간에게 불을 주고, 지식을 전수한 프로메테우스의 휴머니즘적 태도가 김현승의 고독과 밀접하게 관련된다. 김현승의 ‘고독’은 ‘나무’라는 우주목을 매개로 하여 그리스도의 희생적 나눔의 정신으로 확장되기도 하지만, ‘하느님의 아들 예수 그리스도’를 양심의 순교자로 한정시키는 휴머니즘적인 태도를 벗어나지는 못한 것으로 보인다. 이런 김현승의 신앙적 한계에도 불구하고 그가 도달한 ‘양심’의 높이는 한국 현대시사의 독보적인 봉우리로 자리매김하고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
As the titles of his poetry such as Solid Solitude and Absolute Solitude shows, Hyun-seung Kim is a unique poet who adopted 'solitude' as his life-long poetic subject. This study focuses on the meaning of the 'solitude', which Hyun-seung Kim pursued, and its relations to religion. The solitude of Hyun-seung Kim is based on Lucifer Complex which is associated with Lucifer's being punished for the fallen angel's free will and arrogance. The sense of sin which is implied in `apt to doubtful', `purgatory', and `Satan's resistance' within "Self-portrait" and "Man is Solitary" is inherent in Hyun-seung Kim's solitude. Many literary critics including Yun-shik Kim considers Hyun-seung Kim, who was raised in the Christian tradition, as falling into an unchristian world, since he looks upon solitude as something absolute and remains in the world of 'solitude away from religion'. However, this estimation seems to emphasize only one aspect of Hyun-seung Kim, or ignore the stages of religious development proposed by James Fowler. Fowler divides religious development into seven stages. According to his theory, Hyun-seung Kim's poetic position of 'From god to humans', "From religion to solitude' corresponds with Fowler's fifth stage of ‘Individual-Reflective Faith’. This stage is characterized by demystification and those who are in this stage ‘are not to be defined by their roles and structure of meaning in relation with other people, but rather construct their own structure of meaning with their new identity and worldview'. Hyun-seung Kim's structure of meaning takes the form of 'absolute solitude' or 'solid solitude'. Hyun-seung Kim searches for the meaning of `Absolute solitude' or `Solid solitude' through the narrator who shows Promethean Complex implying the faith in reason. The humanistic attitude of Prometheus who introduced fire and initiated knowledge to human is closely connected with Hyun-seung Kim's solitude. While Hyun-seung Kim's 'solitude' extends to the spirit of Jesus Christ's sacrificial sharing through the medium of the ‘tree’, that is, the cosmos tree, he seems to maintain humanistic attitude by limiting ‘Jesus Christ, the son of God’ to the role of conscientious martyr. Despite his religious limitation, the height of 'conscience' that Hyun-seung Kim reached makes him one of the unrivaled modern Korean poets.
