본 연구는 권정생의 ≪밥데기와 죽데기≫를 중심으로 평화를 위한 통일교육의 아동문학적 접근 방향을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 통일교육은 남북 분단의 해소, 민족의 동일성 회복 노력에 더하여 민주시민으로서 평화를 추구하는 교육까지 나아가고 있다. 문학 작품을 활용하면 학생들은 문학의 상상력을 바탕으로 통일의 필요성과 당위성에 대해 정서적 자극을 받을 수 있고 평화와 공존의 가치를 비판적으로 성찰하며 실천하는 태도를 기를 수 있다. 통일교육에서 감수성을 제시한 것은 평화를 전쟁의 부재로보는 소극적 평화에 머무르지 않고, 정의와 인권을 보장하는 적극적 평화로 확장하려는의도를 반영한다. 평화를 이해하기 위해서는 폭력의 문제를 함께 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 폭력에 대한 확장된 개념이 평화에 대한 확장된 개념으로 이어지기 때문이다. 이에 본연구는 폭력과 평화의 관계에 주목하여 폭력을 직접적 폭력, 구조적 폭력, 문화적 폭력으로 유형화하고, 폭력에서 평화로 나아가기 위한 방향을 ≪밥데기와 죽데기≫에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 ≪밥데기와 죽데기≫가 폭력의 순환을 비판적으로 성찰하고 평화의 가치를 확산하는 교육적 의미를 지니며, 통일교육의 매개로 활용될 가능성이 있음을보여주었다. 통일교육이 평화를 위한 교육으로 나아갈 때 동화를 활용하여 폭력의 유형에 따라 접근하는 방향을 제안했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This study explores a children’s literature–based approach to unification education for peace, focusing on Kwon Jung-saeng’s Bapdegi Jukdegi. Unification education should extend beyond resolving national division and restoring identity to cultivating democratic citizens who pursue peace. Through literature, students can emotionally grasp the need for unification, reflect critically on peace and coexistence, and develop attitudes for practice. Emphasizing sensitivity in unification education aims to move from a passive notion of peace as the absence of war toward an active peace that ensures justice and human rights. Focusing on the relationship between violence and peace, this study classifies violence into direct, structural, and cultural types and analyzes Bapdegi Jukdegi to examine the process of moving from violence toward peace. The work reveals the cycle of violence, promotes the value of peace, and demonstrates the educational potential of children’s literature as a medium for peace-oriented unification education.
