Abstract

Considering a transition of a 'bird image' will make it possible to understand how one core image in a poem dominates the other images and gains its own meaning, and how this process relates to the life of the poet. It means that studying one image makes it available to understand biographical factors, poetics, and the poem's periodic change. The evaluation about Park Namsu in the earlier period has been based on 'Mun-Jang', his debut, and the relation with Jung Giyong. His poetry, however, has different colors in itself. The images that he imports from the nature like 'bird', 'light', and 'flower' show how much and why he eagerly pursued the things beyond their natural cause. The meaning of existence through these things is traceable to his own life as a vagabond, and reveals the reflection of the 'dark' and the 'death', which is unique in his poetry. In other way, his poems also include a wish for the 'light' and 'purity' and pursue ideally a new world, but almost all the time, he implies introspection of the wandering, solitude and the death in his poems. His poetry can be summarized as a self-recognition against the rootlessness, being back to home, and an ideal pursuit against the civilization and the war, while the 'bird' image is interacting with the 'light' image, which help the formation of his principal theme such as a 'negation of the fact' and a 'soaring into the dream'.
