이 논문은 그리스도인에게 지적 추구가 의미가 있다면 어떤 의미가 있는가 하는 물음을 가지고 성경과 동아시아 전통을 개략적으로 살펴보되, 그리스 철학 전통에 대해서 서로 다른 입장을 보였던 테르툴리아누스와 클레멘스의 입장을 살펴보고 오늘 그리스도인 학자들이 이들을 통해서 배울 수 있는 것이 무엇인지를 탐구한다. 성경 전통은 지적 추구를 예컨대 그리스 전통에서 보는 것처럼 그렇게 강력하게 추천하지 않으나 신앙의 의미를 차근히 따져 볼 때 지적 추구에 일정한 자리를 부여할 수밖에 없음을 먼저 드러내었다. 테르툴리우누스와 클레멘스의 입장에 대한 논의를 통해 지적 추구를 통해 드러내고자 하는 진리는 오직 하나님에게만 속한 것이며 인간이 할 수 있는 것은 사물이나 진술에 대해서 형용사적으로, 또는 부사적으로 서술할 수 있음을 드러내었다. 결론 부분에서는 하나님의 나라의 관점에서 그리스도인이 지적 추구를 할 때 어떻게 할 수 있을지 개략적인 논의를 덧붙였다.
Abstract
This paper raises a question whether or not intellectual pursuit is significant to Christians and tries to identify Biblical and East-Asian traditions with regards to this question and seeks the lessons which contemporary Christians can learn from two prominent Church fathers, Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria, who took different positions towards Greek philosophy. It is shown that, though Biblical tradition doesn't encourage intellectual pursuit so much as one can expect as in Greek tradition, sincere and trustful faith in triune God necessarily implies the use of mind and intellect and that intellectual pursuit has a proper place in Christian faith. Discussion about two propositions "God alone is truth"(Tertullian) and "All truth is God's truth"(Clement) is resulted in my thesis that proper use of the word 'truth' is applicable to God alone and all our use of it is either adverbial or adjective. The last section is devoted to consider the meaning of the Kingdom of God for Christian scholarship.
