Abstract
This paper aims to examine Edward Morgan Forster’s novel, A Passage to India, and denote the aspects and problems of the matter of 'the other,' centering on the relationship between the English as the colonizing ‘self,’ and India as the colonized ‘other,’ and consider a method of improvement founded upon the basis of the Christian perspective. In this work, which is composed of three parts, “Mosque,” “Caves,” and “Temples” respectively, the author attempts to find some alternatives to the limited range of Christian amour in Islam and Hinduism. In the course, the English Christians lose themselves, as well as their way, in the caves of Marabar. Such personal disturbances eventually lead to the national conflict between the two nations. Considering that such a negative attitude is derived from lack of insight of the world, which is composed of ‘I’ and ‘You’ created by God, it seems significant to reconsider the most basic relationship of the ‘self’ and the‘other,’ on the basis of such philosophers as Martin Buber, Mikhail Bakhtin and Emmanuel Levinas, who have emphasized the ‘other’ rather than ‘self,’ as a critical component to the success of the human relationship. In brief, this work seems to maintain that the concept of the ‘other,’ which has been explored, oppressed, and marginalized for the sake of ‘mystery’ and ‘enlightenment' under imperial circumstances, should be modified to be recognized, acknowledged, and sometimes respected as an independent subject, according to the command of God, who urges us to love one another. Thus, after reading this work, in light of the three philosophers who advocate human relationship based on the consideration of the 'other,' it is conceivable for our society to reflect on our own plight and rationalize a means of creating a proper relationship amongst others for personal, political and religious purposes.
