Deceit, Desire, and the Novel, Violence and the Sacred와 Things Hidden을 출판한 후에 인류학, 신학, 심리학, 법학, 정치학과 같은 다양한 분야의 학자들이 그의 이론에 반응했다.

Abstract

Girard’s theory of mimesis begins with his discovery of human mimetic desire in the works of five European novelists. The characters in the novels copy each other, not merely in external characteristics but also in internal matters. For Girard, human desire is imitative and acquisitive. The pattern of desire is not linear but triangular: it runs from the subject through the mediator to the object. The distance between the subject and the model is what decides whether the mimesis between them will be in conflict or not. After the publication of his books such as Deceit, Desire, and the Novel, Violence and the Sacred, and Things Hidden, scholars in many fields including anthropology, theology, psychology, law, politics, have been interested in his work. They have reacted to his theory. Some aspects of the criticisms above are worth considering, but Girard’s theory of mimesis has some merits. Firstly, his understanding of mimesis provides a powerful tool for finding reality beyond the text. A text does not exist only for aesthetic enjoyment but also for practical contribution to human life. Secondly, Girard’s enthusiasm to propose a theory and his effort to test its validity is admirable in a context in which cognitive nihilism is dominant. In addition, Girard’s theory demonstrates more clearly the aspect of Jesus’ obedience to God. Jesus’ willingness to follow the will of God the Father is expressed in the mode of good mimesis. Jesus’ suffering and obedience, which accompany his humiliation and exaltation, are essential qualifications for him to overcome the power of the devil. He is presented as a model for the brothers and sisters to follow in their journey to glory and honor, which God the Father wants to bestow on them. In other words, Jesus’ obedience and self-giving becomes the pattern of the non-rivalristic mimesis for the Christian life.
