Abstract

This paper explores the meaning of partiality in relation to the possibility of communication by examining the concept of “situated knowledges” suggested by Donna Haraway. While universalism denies the partiality of knowledge, both relativism and “situated knowledges” acknowledge the partiality of all knowledges, which is based on the subject’s location and position. However, even though relativists may embrace the partiality that allows tolerance, their concept of partiality does not facilitate communication because its partiality connotes indifference to the ideas of others. For communication, it is necessary not only to acknowledge the partiality but also to make connections with others. “Situated knowledges” embrace the partiality that implies the interconnectedness between partialities. While Haraway stresses the connection between different positions, she does not provide how to make communication possible despite the indifference and how to understand other’s experiences despite the different contexts. Lugones’ “‘world’-traveling” provides the possibility of understanding others without losing the sens of partiality by imagining other perspectives in their own contexts.
