Abstract

Focused on "AMWMC"(Asian Migrant Women's Multicultural Community)in Inchon this study aims to find out the possibility that the community of married migrant women has grown to become a multicultural space and place, in which the women’s struggle for recognition has become active. Married migrant women in Korea have to go through the process of compulsory assimilation without any support group such as family, relatives, or peers. And even if they have "successfully"assimilated, their membership in Korean society is still conditional. The Korean language barrier is not the only problem that these women face. Confucian culture with its ideology of pure blood lineage following the paternal line, the consumption culture of neo-liberalism,and the current education system based on brutal competition all contribute to the long-lasting isolation and social insecurity of married migrant women. In this context, place and space are very important. Married migrant women from different countries have the possibility to meet with each other and develop a collective identity of "we are migrant women" on one hand, and the consciousness as "activist" on the other. This sense of community and sharing of ideas about a multicultural society can be shared with Korean NGO activists. Belonging to such a community is crucial for migrant women not only to develop an undistorted identity, but also to be integrated into Korean society. In a migrant women's community like "AMWMC" members are able to share their experiences of migration fully against the monopoly of representation of "migrant women" or "multicultural family," that mainstream society holds. In other words, they’re able to speak for themselves and have their own agency. AMWC is also a place in which a real multicultural attitude and relationship can be learned and embodied. The roots of empowerment for married migrant women grow from psychological attachment and mental orientation, and by working together mutual recognition can be achieved by mainstream Korean society.
