Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the space consciousness of Mt. Jiri in the poems of Lee Seong-bu. Based on the aspects of the mountain as a utopia, place of conflicts and confrontations, and foundation for life, the study would closely examine its space depicted in his works and shed light onto it from a new perspective. Specifically, it would focus on his Mt. Jiri and Small Mountains Covering a Big Mountain to deal with the space consciousness of Mt. Jiri. Chapter 2 examined the aspects of Mt. Jiri as a utopia in his “All Roads Lead To Cheonghakdong”(Mt. Jiri) and “Master Nammyeong”(Mt. Jiri), noting that he inherited the old tradition in those poems. Chapter 3 examined the historical aspects of the mountain in his “A Picture of Kim Gae-Nam”(Mt. Jiri) and “Akyang Cheonghakigol of a Girl Warrior”(Mt. Jiri). Holding an invariable place in the Korean history, Mt. Jiri tells many bending stories of history. The study checked the historical facts hidden in the mountain through individual figures having the deep sorrow of history in their hearts. Chapter 4 examined the aspects of the mountain as a foundation for life in his “Mr. Shim Man-Seop at Restaurant Dolmadang”(Small Mountains Covering a Big Mountain) and “A Road to Freedom”(Small Mountains Covering a Big Mountain), making a farther step from the winding pain of history and checking its aspects as a foundation for life. The study thus looked into the space consciousness of Mt. Jiri as it was depicted in the poems of Lee Seong-bu, in which the mountain was not an object of contemplation but was subject to the variations of broader meanings. The study showed what kind of meanings the space of Mt. Jiri had in his poems.
