Abstract

Now the "Korean Wave" has become one of the characteristics that reflect the cultural topography of our times. Before the Korean Wave emerged, the popular culture of Korean society has highly depended on the "cultural power" of the state like the U. S, which reveals the colonialism of the cultural topography. The reason why many pay attention to the Korean Wave lies in the overthrow of this cultural colonialism. As such, the emergence of the Korean Wave and its prevalence reflect the fissure of universally accepted cultural topography. And behind its prevalence lies the topographical change from the culture acceptance to the culture propagation. This paper asserts that the change in the cultural topography which the Korean Wave has initiated is closely related to Koreas characteristic interpretation of modernity and the "modernity project." The agressive interpretation and practice of modernity in 60s to 80s are closely related to the culture "acceptance" of those times while the newly emerged alternative interpretation and practice of modernity after the Korean Wave in the late ‘90s are to the culture "propagation" of today. After all, the change in the cultural topography linked with the Korean Wave reflects the modernity interpretation and practice of Korean society.
