Abstract

Broadcast Literature in Late Colonial Period and Collaborationwith Japan; Seo, Jae-KilThe purpose of this paper is to examine a work of radio literature in the newly-found journal Friends of Broadcast. Through a historical overview of radio broadcast during the Japanese colonial period, this paper explores the ways in which the journal was born and characterized. In doing so, I iluminate that while the medium of radio established a colonial public sphere in the bargain betwen the colonizer and the opressed colonized, it also contributed to the formation of cultural modernity by alowing for a certain amount of the Korean language programs for Korean audiences. The monthly journal of Friends of Broadcast, which was published with these enlightening and propagandistic aims at the end of the Pacific War, consisted of a lecture series on culture and politics. Radio literature written by representative Korean authors was then put in the “Masterpiece” section of the journal and the primary concerns of those radio novels and dramas were war-time mobilization and collaboration.
