Abstract

This article introduces forty new stories of Eouyadam with a Korean translation and an analysis on why they have been coffined for a while. Due to the author Yu Mong- in(1559~1623)’s death by a false accusation caused when King Injo took over the throne, the original draft of Eouyadam stories could not be edited properly as a whole by the author and were left in diverse versions for a long time. In 1964, his descendant Yu Jehan published Eouyadam in a printed style, based on a handwritten version in his house, Manjongjae, in Goheung of Jeollanamdo and several other versions. This new publication has been called the Manjongjae Version and has been utilized as the most important material by researchers of Eouyadam. However, I recognized such flaws as wrong letters and dropped words in this new version while comparing it with other handwritten versions in which forty stories were newly found. Most of these new stories contain either negative aspects of characters or avoiding things of those days. Among others, some stories are worthy of notice because they vividly show living conditions and the signs of the times in the mid-Joseon period.
