Abstract
This paper outlines the history and characteristics of Japan's archive system in the modern and contemporary period, as well as tasks for it to improve on. It focuses on the current situation of the preservation and management of archives in the National Archives of Japan, Diplomatic Record Office, and the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records. Japan's archives developed under the goal of controlling society through the Edo and Meiji periods, and this goal saw little change during the postwar period of the US military occupation. Since the legislation of the National Archives Law in 1971, state documents were archived per the revised law from 1987 to 1999, but public access and use of the documents was severely limited due to the restrictions of the Information Disclosure Law. Despithe state documents related to the Parcific War among records in preserved in the National Archives of Japan and Diplomatic Record Office, the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records established by the Murayama Cabinet created a system that synthesized Japanese colonial government records. The issue of using individuals'f information in the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records' system will need to be improved on for use by both Korea and Japan when creating an archive on Korea and the Japanese colonial period.
