미국 국립기록관리청(NARA) 소장 북한 노획 대형 포스터의 기록화 스토리텔링 -1945~1950년 제작된 대형 포스터를 중심으로-

Abstract

This paper presents the archival records of North Korea’s large posters captured by the U.S. military in Pyongyang during the Korean War. It analyzes the images and texts of the posters using documentation storytelling methods to uncover their historical value beyond the National Archives and Records Administration’s meta-records, where the archival records are stored. It consist of large posters produced and distributed in North Korea between 1945 and 1950, during its early state formation. This paper aims to address both the non-narrative meta-records aspect and the narrative aspect of interpreting the historical significance implied by this archival records. From an archival perspective, the chapter that presenting the large posters seized in North Korea, categorizes them into four parts according to its content, provides an overview of the records, and specifies the production, source, and transfer details. In the chapter of documentation storytelling analysis of this posters, I analyze the most frequent words ‘people,’ ‘democracy,’ and ‘people’s committee’ on approximately 230 posters to explore the political, economic, ideological, and historical contexts that these words imply, as well as the issues and values that were most important in North Korea at the time. Next, I will interpret and describe the historical situation of that time through the images and texts revealed on 35 large-scale posters. Additionally, I will discuss the formal and content specificities that constitute the record of the large-scale posters captured in North Korea. Through this process, the aim is to capture the historical significance of the posters and determine their effectiveness in portraying the formation of the North Korean state during that time.
