Abstract

Due to the increase in the elderly population, the number of patients visiting dental clinics with multiple chronic diseases and polypharmacy is increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to be familiar with the oral signs and symptoms that specific diseases and drugs can cause and the modification of dental treatment plan in those specific circumstances. In addition, it is necessary to continuously study the effects of drugs prescribed in dental clinics on patients’ diseases and conditions and the possibility of drug interactions. Recommendations or criteria have been published to reduce the possibility of drug side effects in elderly patients. The Beers criteria and STOPP/START criteria are the most well-known, and the latest versions were published in 2023. The Beers criteria and STOPP/START criteria are focused on medical field, so they are not well known in the field of dentistry. However, some of their contents are helpful for dental treatment, so they should be of interest. This review present useful information on drug interactions that dental clinicians should be aware of, introduce the Beers criteria and STOPP/START criteria, and briefly review their contents and structures to provide useful information for geriatric dental treatment.
