Abstract
This study observes the identity and values of the Eosan Group through the transmission training of Jakbeop, which is a Buddhist rite. Traditional arts of the past were performed by groups of professionals and Buddhist rites were also practiced, preserved, and transmitted by the Eosan group, which is a group specializing in Buddhist rites. However, as the times changed, performance diagnoses of traditional art changed along with performance groups. However, despite such periodical changes, there are still closed groups that adhere to old performance methods and these are the Buddhist rite-performing Eosan group and the Shamanic group of East Coast Byeolsingut (Village Rituals). These groups are unique in their religious rites and the Eosan group is composed of priestly relations and the Shamanic group is composed of family members. With interest in such unique groups, this article made observations of the identity and values of the Eosan group, which performs the Jakbeop dance. The Jakbeop dance is an offering, made using movements through the body along with prayer and worship towards Buddha and the dance movements of the Jakbeop dance contain Buddhist doctrines or philosophies as a representation of the words of Buddha. Because of this, the Jakbeop dance is not a dance to be performed with beautiful artistic perfection, but a dance that expresses Buddhist ideas with the body. Tthe Jakbeop dance is a unique domain that can only be performed by monks. However, as training of the Jakbeop dance has been introduced into the institutional education system, it is changing in form. Within these conditions, the researcher looked into the unique structures of the Eosan group based on examinations of the training sites of the Jakbeop dance and through this, attempted to reveal their unique and significant world.
