김현승의 자기반영적 시에 내포된 정념 연구 -시세계 변모 과정 속 긍지와 소심의 교차 양상-

김현승의 시세계에 대한 연구는 주로 신앙과 존재론적 고찰 등 관념적인 부분에 중점을 두고 진행되었다. 이와 같은 연구 경향 속에서 김현승의 시에 내포된 정념의 변모에 대한 고찰은 부족한 상태이다. 이에 본고는 김현승의 자기반영적 시편들에 나타난 정념을 시기에 따라 나누어 살펴봄으로써 그의 시세계 변화를 이해하는 지평을 보다 넓히고자 했다. 이를 위해 정념이 인상, 관념과 상호 관계를 맺고 있다는 인식을 기반으로 다양한 정념을 분석한 데이비드 흄의 정념론 중 자아와 밀접하게 연결되어 있는 감정인 ‘긍지’와 ‘소심’에 대한 고찰을 방법론으로 삼았다. 김현승의 자기반영적 시에서 언어가 정념의 대상으로 두드러지게 나타나는 시기의 시들을 살펴보면 그가 시인으로서 자신이 소유한 언어에 특별한 가치를 부여하고, 이를 통해 시를 쓴다는 데에 높은 긍지를 지니면서도 언어를 통해 세계를 완벽하게 재현할 수는 없다는 인식으로부터 소심의 정념을 느끼고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이후 추상적인 관념의 세계와 자기 내면세계의 충돌이 더욱 심화되는 시기의 자기반영적 시들은 ‘아름다움’과 ‘흉’, ‘쾌’와 ‘불쾌’라는 정념의 원인들이 ‘보석’, ‘납덩이’와 같은 은유를 통해 대비된다. 이때 시인은 상실감이나 무력감과 같은 소심의 정념을 강인함이라는 긍지의 요소로 극복하려는 모습을 보인다. 또한 자신의 한계를 인정하고 소심의 정념으로부터 겸허의 덕으로 나아가고자 하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 변화는 긍지가 허영으로 격하되지 않도록 제어하고, 소심을 덕으로 승화시킴으로써 긍지를 지켜내고자 하는 모습으로 이어진다. 김현승이 ‘시’라는 동일한 대상에 대해 느끼는 정념이 시기에 따라 차이를 보이는 것은 그의 시세계의 변화가 지성적 고뇌와 감정의 곡절이라는 다층적인 측면에서 고찰되어야 함을 보여 준다.
Abstract
Studies on the Poetic Esprit of Kim Hyun-Seung have been made mainly focusing on faith and ontological consideration. In this tendency of the studies, there is lack of consideration on passions connoted in the poetry of Kim Hyun-Seung. In turn, this study is to broaden the horizon of understanding the change in Kim’s Poetic Esprit through examining the passions represented in his self-reflective poems by period. To perform this study, based on the cognition that passions have interrelation with impression and ideas, consideration on ‘pride’ and ‘humility’, which are emotions connected closely to Ego among David Hume‘s Passions of the Soul that analysed various emotions, has been taken as its methodology. Looking into Kim‘s self-reflective poems, especially in the period of which language noticeably used as the object of passions, he gives special value on language of his own as a poet. It verifies that he has the emotions of humility from awareness that he cannot recreate the world perfectly through language, though he has high pride on writing poems. Later, in the period of deepening conflicts between the realm of abstract ideas and the inner world of the poet, the subjects of passions such as Beauty and Deformity, Pleasure and Displeasure are contrasted through metaphor like ‘jewel’ and ‘lead’ in his self-reflective poems. At the moment, poet takes a stand for overcoming the emotions of humility such as dejection and helplessness by element of pride like strength. Moreover, he admits his limitations and tries to change the emotions of humility into the virtue of modest. This change shows that he tries to keep pride by controlling it not to be downgraded to vanity, as well as transcending humility into virtue. In conclusion, Kim Hyun-Seung’s passions are presented differently by period even on the identical object as Poetry. It means that the change of his Poetic Esprit has to be considered from a multi-layered perspective of intellectual agony and vicissitudes of sentiment.
