종교 공간의 장소성과 사회적 의미의 관계: 명동성당을 사례로

본 연구에서는 명동성당이 갖는 성스러운 공간으로서의 상징성과 사회적인 저항의 공간으로서의 상징성 이 어떻게 결합되었으며, 변화해가고 있는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 명동성당은 한국 최초의 천주교 교회이며 수도 를 관할하는 서울교구의 주교좌 본당이라는 천주교회의 권위와 역사성, 천주교 성지로서의 치외법권적 공간의 성 격, 서울 도심에 자리잡은 입지적 중심성으로 인해 1970년대와 1980년대에 민주화의 진원지로서의 역할을 수행하 였다. 1980년대 후반부터 1990년대에는 점차 집단적 이익을 성취하기 위한 농성장소로 변질되기 시작하였고, 장기 농성의 폐해로 인해 2000년대 명동성당은 집회ㆍ시위에 대한 허가제를 통해 성당을 더 이상 이익집단들의 권리 청원을 위한 공간으로 이용되는 것을 막아왔다. 이는 명동성당의 탈정치화, 다기능화, 비성역화와 함께 각계 각층 의 집단이익추구에 대한 사회전체의 냉담한 반응이 결합되어 나타난 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 명동성당에 모여든 시 위대에 대한 주변 상인, 신자, 신부들의 반응은 정치적 흐름과 맥을 같이 하여, 환영의 단계에서 무관심ㆍ묵과의 단계로, 다음은 분노ㆍ적대의 단계로 변화되어 왔음을 알 수 있다. 더불어 명동성당에서 있었던 집회ㆍ시위 내용 의 검토를 통해 특정 연도의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화에서의 주요 이슈와 갈등요인을 파악할 수 있었으며, 명동성당 이 천주교 신앙을 위한 종교적 장소로서 뿐만 아니라 역사와 시대의 증언대로서의 역할을 수행해 왔음을 확인할 수 있었다. 명동성당의 장소성에 대한 연구는 서울 도심부 명동성당 구역의 환경개선을 위한 기초자료로서 이용 될 수 있으며, 사회적으로 구성된 담론의 해석이란 측면에서는 한국 사회의 한 단면을 이해할 수 있다는 데서 그 의의를 찾아 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
The study focuses on the placeness of Seouls Myeongdong Cathedral and its changing social meanings.Myegongdong Cathedral, completed in 1898, was the first Catholic Church in Korea. The Cathedral became asymbol of the peoples democratic movement in the middle 1970s and the 1980s. It was a frequent focal point foranti-government demonstrations and dissident holdouts, given that the place played a role of a safe haven whereprotesters were not forcibly ousted by the government. In December, 2000, however, the Myeongdong Cathedraldeclared its policy of no longer admitting protesters who do not have prior approval from the church after undergoingchaotic and unpleasant demonstrations by telecommucation unionists who showed rude behaviors includingvandalizing church property and cluttering the compound with piles of trash. Although the Korean society recognizesthe Cathedral as the time-honored sanctuary of unionists and student rebels on the run in the 1980s, the CatholicChurch has recently opposed interest groups using the cathedral to fulfill their demands. The responses towardprotesters shown by priests, worshippers, and merchants in the neighborhood started with the level of euphoria in themiddle 1970s, went through the level of apathy and connivance in the 1990s, and have currently reached the level ofirritation and antagonism. The statistics of protests held at the Cathedral reveal a chronicle of key issues dealt with by the society.
