Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the sleep hour gap among couple exists or not. This study focused on weekend time frame when paid work is less noticeable in the individual’s time allocation. Research assumption was made according to the time limit hypothesis, that argue there is a high competition between sleeping, free time and family work on weekends. Subsample of married couples (# of households=1,062, # of diary=2,120, age range 20-59) from the original 2009 KTUS (Korean Time Use Survey)was employed. The results showed that gender difference in sleep was apparent on weekends, as wies were less likely to oversleep than husbands on weekends. The trade-off pattern were especially intense with the unemployed wives’ case, which imply that women’s leisure and weekend unpaid family work, all together is highly competitive with their sleep hours. However, employed wives showed similar pattern with employed hudsband’s graph, which was less competitive among sleep and free time, even family work. For the detailed analysis, The couples were grouped into three categories, which was oversleep wives group, sleep deprived wives group, and sleep equal group. Multinomial analysis revealed that, husband’s weekend activities (having paid work on weekends, or have free time) was associated with wives’ oversleep. However, husband’s share of family work was not helping to increase their wives’s weekend sleeping hours. Wives’ income power did showed the protecting effect for wives to sleep more.
